I've had a history of seeing foods disappear from restaurants I like. I absolutely loved Cracker Barrel's onion rings, they were the best ever, and one day kids and I showed up and ordered them, "Cracker Barrel has discontinued onion rings." I think my jaw dropped down a foot. "You've got to be kidding me? They were so good, how could they get rid of them?" Waitress: "I don't know, it seems strange to me too, but it was a management decision from the top." Duh-uh. Can just see 4 fat execs at Cracker Barrel corporate headquarters sitting around saying, "We need to adjust our menu, what can we get rid of? Yes, onion rings!" Egad. Dumb!
Then Uno's restaurant had an absolutely delicious tomato basil soup. Never tasted another one anywhere that could compare to it. It was perfect. I would go there just to eat it. Then one day the kids and I showed up for dinner and I ordered it. "We've changed our menu, ma'am, we no longer make that soup." I pouted and groaned and made it absolutely clear I thought that was a bad decision.
Then just two weeks ago I drove thru Starbucks. "I'd like a Savory Square heated up please?" "Sorry, Starbucks no longer carries that." "But it's here on your menu outside!" I responded. "We just haven't changed the sign yet." ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That thing was to die for, it was so delicious. I didn't care that it was five bucks, for me every bite was worth it.
Then I used to ADORE Good Humor's Almond Ice Cream Bars and the only place I could find them was the big Walmart several miles from my home. Then one day I looked and it was gone. "Good Humor has discontinued making those," the food manager told me when I asked. No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have loved those since childhood. Can't be true, can't be true!
Then at my local health food store there were fresh tasting key lime cookies that were kept in the frozen food section, and a certain brand of Japanese green tea that I favored. They were both there for years and were fantastic together. I would bring them home and those cookies would be gone in 10 minutes, everyone came running to get them. I asked the manager, "I only see the ginger ones now, what happened to the key lime cookies, they were fantastic!" "The manufacturer has discontinued those, they only make the ginger and chocolate ones now. The green tea wasn't selling well so I stopped stocking it."
So now, when I hear something is going to be discontinued I do tend to believe it! Everything I love the most is always taken away.
