These have to be some of the prettiest movie posters you will see. They are for the upcoming Korean film, Man of the Old Mountain: The Great Map of the East Land ( 고산자: 대동여지도), starring Cha Seung Won. Directed by Kang Woo Suk ( Moss, Fist of Legend, Tough as Iron), it is based on the life of Kim Jeong Ho (aka Gosanja), who produced the most comprehensive map of Joseon in the middle of the 19th century. It was believed that this dedicated geographer went on his two feet traveling around the country to compile his greatest masterpiece, which would come to be known as Daedongyeojido (The Great Map of the East Land). The movie is based on the trials and tribulations faced by the character in his attempt to record everything into one big map, fighting against the political power of late Joseon and his own fate. The character lost his father due to faulty map, driving him into producing a complete map recording precise and detailed information, from mountain valleys and bridges, to the smallest details like past magistrate office and even settlements. The movie will include the behind story of Gosanja, including his map which will bring him to the most powerful man in Joseon at that time, Heungseon Daewongun. Daewongun was the regent for his young son Gojong at the time of Daedongyeojido completion, but Gosanja's whereabouts after the publication of a later version of the map in 1866 remained a mystery. The film will open sometime in September in Korea.

In last weekend's Korean boxoffice the period thriller Age of Shadows was #1, but this unassuming historical dark horse film came in #2, beating out Hollywood blockbuster Alice Through the Looking Glass. Trailer:

I watched this movie last week. I found it available for free on the Roku streaming channel (of all places). Based on a true story, it was kind of a sad tale, but it was beautifully filmed with lots of great scenery. Cha Seung Won was rather amusing as the lead, the quirky mapmaker Kim Jeong Ho.
