Minari has just been nominated for 6 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Steven Yeun for Best Actor, Youn Yuh Jung for Best Supporting Actress, Lee Isaac Chung for Best Director, Lee Isaac Chung for Best Original Screenplay, and Emile Mosseri for Best Original Score.
Steven Yeun is the first Asian-American actor to be nominated for the Best Actor title from the Academy Awards, while Youn Yuh Jung is the first Korean person to be nominated in an acting category at the Oscars.
Based on the director's real-life experiences, the movie is about a family of South Korean immigrants who try to start a new life in rural America during the 1980s.
Minari has already won for Best Motion Picture in a Foreign Language at the 78th Golden Globes and took home a Grand Jury Prize and an Audience Award at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. The movie and star Alan Kim also both scored wins at the 26th Critics Choice Awards. So far, the film and its team have won a whopping 91 trophies from award ceremonies and associations.
