That's a good sounding word for plush toy. Is that a compound of two other words? Or do they even do compounds in Japanese?

Yep; the word 縫いぐるみ (nuigurumi) is composed of the noun 縫い (nui - sewing, embroidery) and the verb くるむ (kurumu - to wrap up). The word "nui" itself comes from the verb 縫う (nuu - to sew, to stitch). Also, a side note: you might've noticed that as part of a compound word, "kurumi" changed to "gurumi". This is because since the "ku" syllable was preceded by a vowel, the "ku" is softened to a "gu". This is what often happens in compound words in Japanese. For example, 桜 (sakura - cherry blossom) and 山桜 (yamazakura - wild cherry blossom); the "sa" syllable is softened to a "za".

These are all such pretty words. They roll right off the tongue, unlike a lot of Korean words which are a struggle to pronounce.
