Is the word for forest a little more formal than the one for woods, as in English? (Or that's my impression, anyway.) Or would there be some other shade of difference between the two?

The difference between mori and hayashi is that mori is bigger/thicker than hayashi.

Lawn - 芝生 - しばふ

When making the foo sound, form it as if you were blowing out a candle, not with your teeth.

Do they have the f sound with the teeth at all in Japanese? I think it's interesting how common sounds in one language are totally absent sometimes in others.

No, they don't. The "fu" syllable in Japanese is part of the "h-" group of syllables - ha, hi, he, ho, ha. But the way its sound is produced - like blowing out a candle - makes it sound more like "fu" than "hu".
