The Japanese word of the day for May 15, 2015 is...
Blue - 青 - あお
Romanization: ao (ah-oh)
If you want to directly describe something as blue, you would say 青い (aoi).
However, this can also mean green, or inexperienced.

How could they use the same word for two different colors? Strange how languages work. Often a given language has a word with no equivalent in other languages. I remember hearing that Russian has no equivalent for the English word privacy—don't know if that's true or not.

I'm not sure what's up with Japanese and Korean in that the word for blue can also mean green. It's certainly strange. Korean also has a specific word for green, so I suppose they could use that word to avoid confusion. I've encountered plenty of foreign language words that don't translate simply into English. The German word Gemütlichkeit is a good example. It's a noun describing a space or state of warmth and friendliness, including qualities of coziness, peace of mind, belonging, and social acceptance. There really is no English word that means all that.  |

Gemütlichkeit sounds like a good word. We ought to swipe it.
Thinking about the blue/green thing, they are on a continuum on one part of the color wheel, with green always having some blue and usually blue having some green, so I can kind of see how they might consider them together.
Another interesting thing is how the importance of something in a culture can be judged by how many specific words there are for it. Aren't there something like thirty words for different kinds of snow in the Eskimo language? I don't know how that would relate to the color thing, though.

 Yeah, I can see where you're coming from. But, like any other language, it gets easier with time and practice. It's been three years since I first started my baby steps into the language, and now I've (mostly) got the hang of it. And yeah, it is a wild avatar! It's a goofy picture of Grace I found a day or two ago, and since I love seeing goofy pictures of Grace, I made it my avatar.  |
