Flicker Alley is taking pre-orders for William Gillette's Sherlock Holmes for an October 20 release date. This is the film that was just rediscovered last year in France and restored.

I think it was you I first heard about this from! With all the forum discontinuity in the past year, I figured it would be good to bring this up again before the release date.

Well, now they've pushed back the release date to November 3, but that also means the pre-release sale is extended.

What was the story behind them finding this film, again? I don't remember.

Found in a French film museum, but not correctly identified.

You have to wonder how many other classics have gone missing simply due to poor labeling.

This looks like an exciting release. There are some interesting extras, too. Alas, I have no Blu-ray player.
Re the mislabeling, I think I remember reading recently that one of Jolson's early Vitaphone shorts thought lost was found in a mislabeled can. I'm sure there are many others.

I'm not exactly sure what's Blu-ray about it, actually. What I received was a 2-disc set that said "Blu-ray/DVD," but both of the discs were simply labeled "DVD." I'll have to try them in my computer, which can only handle DVD's, and let you know whether it all works. I'm not enough of a techie to know whether they can encode material as DVD and Blu-ray on the same disc.

Hmm. If a supposed Blu-ray disc says DVD on it I would immediately suspect bootleg. Movie companies on the up and up always label DVD or Blu-ray properly depending on the disc, otherwise it's false advertising. Either that, or the merchant made a mistake and gave you two DVDs instead of one DVD and one Blu-ray. I have several Miyazaki films with DVD-Blu-ray combination discs, and it states clearly on the boxes that these sets contain both separate discs.
Regular DVDs are constructed with a red lazar which is smaller than a blue lazar which can accommodate more space on a Blu-ray. Therefore the resolution (usually 720 for DVD and 1080 for Blu-ray) is much superior on a Blu-ray disc watched through a Blu-ray player. Almost all Blu-ray players can also read DVD4 and DVD9 discs so that's not an issue.
Edit: obviously my spellchecker is an idiot, it automatically changed the word l-a-s-e-r to lazar. Oi vey. LOL.

It wouldn't be a bootleg; it came directly from Flicker Alley. They are labeled as Disc 1 and Disc 2, but both have the DVD symbol on them.

Well then Flicker Alley is not being kosher. Labeling matters. See if both discs play in your DVD Player. A true Blu-ray disc will not play on a DVD player alone, but all DVDs should play on Blu-ray players. That's why most people have upgraded to have the flexibility to watch both.

Yep, that's what I'm going to try later on my computer (DVD drive only).

My computer DVD drive is reading both discs just fine. I would tentatively conclude that Flicker Alley's "Blu-ray" designation is false and these discs should work in any DVD player.

The Blu-Ray disc is under the front booklet when you open the case. The two discs are on the right side of the case, one above the other. If you don't take the booklet out (it IS a booklet, though you might have to look twice!), you'll never find the blu-ray disc!
