Dadam Ginger Tea ( 다담 생강차) You've probably seen similar little single-serving packets used in dramas for instant coffee, but they make a wide variety of teas as well. This one is ginger tea. It was tangy, but refreshing. I quite liked it, though I definitely think it would be much better as a wintertime drink. My rating: ★★★★☆

Lotte Sand Black (롯데 샌드 깜뜨)Today's snack are these fairly obvious Oreos knock-offs, Lotte Sand Black cookies. I expect that 'Sand' is short for 'Sandwich', which is probably a bit of a mouthful for Koreans. Lotte Sand brand cookies come in a variety of unusual flavors, but these are the familiar chocolate wafers with sweet frosting between them. The Oreo comparisons are inevitable, but on their own merit, I quite liked them. The wafers were crisp and had a more distinct chocolate flavor than Oreos have. There was noticeably less frosting sandwiched in between, which I actually liked (the frosting on Oreos is too sweet for my taste). My rating: ★★★★☆

Nongshim Potato Noodle Soup (농심 감자면)Today I'm trying another ramen variety, Nongshim Potato Noodle Soup. While most ramen noodles are made with wheat flower, these are made with potato flower. Like previous ramen noodles I've tried, the package comes with separate soup stock and vegetable packets. The directions call for 400ml of water and 6 minutes in the microwave. I added the egg. The first thing you notice is the texture of the noodles; they are thicker and much chewier than your standard ramen. The broth was similar in flavor to the Handmade Noodle Soup I previously tried, but definitely quite heavy on the garlic and onion. My tongue and lips went numb! Overall, I quite liked the noodles, but the broth was a bit strong for my taste. If I tried this again, I'd only use a bit more than half the broth packet. Yeah, I'm a wimp. My rating: ★★★☆☆

Lotte Yogurt Jelly Candy (롯데 요구르트 젤리)With something called Yogurt Jelly, coming in this odd-looking package, I really wasn't sure what to expect. They are actually yogurt fruit gummis. The gummis are shaped like little yogurt bottles (like the image on the package). They are soft, but chewy and quite flavorful. The actual flavor is a blend of different fruits with the most obvious one being peaches. Not bad at all. I liked 'em. My rating: ★★★★☆

Crown Choco Heim (크라운 쵸코하임)These are chocolate and hazelnut cream wafers. They come in separately packed perforated pairs, which snap apart like a Twix bar. The wafer is very light and slightly sweet and reminded me of the sugar cones you'd get with a soft-serve ice cream cone. The centers are filled with chocolate cream with just a hint of hazelnut. At first I thought they were a bit bland, but the more I ate, the more I liked them. My rating: ★★★★☆

CSMS Zang Snack (Jjangiya) (코스모스 짱이야)Today's Korean snack is another variety of corn chips, but instead of being salty or spicy, they are sweet. Their Korean name, Jjangiya, literally translates to "It's awesome" - quite a bold statement. Let's see how they measure up to that standard. Well, these odd looking chips look a bit like an over-sized breakfast cereal. But, no milk is required to eat these. They are quite crunchy. They're sweetened with sugar, nutmeg, and a touch of cinnamon, but are not as sweet as one might expect from anything similar in your American snack food aisle. I liked that. I'm not sure I would call them "awesome", but they are pretty tasty. My rating: ★★★★☆

Crown Saecom Dalcom Strawberry (크라운 새콤달콤 딸기)Korea's answer to Starbursts. They are fruit chews. They may look like bubblegum, but I was rather surprised by their flavor. They're pretty sour. Despite looking very artificial, they really taste like fresh, unsweetened strawberries! My rating: ★★★★☆

Samyang Seafood Party Noodle Soup (삼양 해물파티)Today, I've got another ramen variety - this time with a seafood flavor theme going on. As usual, the package comes with separate soup base and dried veggies packet, which included carrots and appropriately seaweed bits. 550ml of water and 5 minutes in the microwave. It's supposed to be a "party", so how about adding a little music and dancing with this 2009 vintage CF hawking the brand with none other than the lovely ladies of Girls' Generation: Well, I can't say that I really loved this party, but it was okay. I must confess that I'm not a huge seafood lover to start with, so I suppose someone who is might like this more than I did. The flavors from lobster, crab, oysters, anchovies, and even some bits of dried cuttlefish contributed to its seafood character, but were not overpoweringly fishy. My lips and tongue were again tingling from the heavy garlic and pepper extract in the broth (I'm such a wuss). Sadly, the best part of this shindig was the shrimp I invited to the party, though that's probably not a big surprise. My rating: ★★☆☆☆

Haitai 'Oh! Yes' Green Tea Choco Cake (해태 오예스 녹차)These snack cakes are quite similiar to Choco Pies - two thin layers of cake with a cream filling between them, covered with chocolate. What's unusual about this variety is the filling, which is flavored with green tea. As I've discovered with Choco Pies, the cake has a tendency to be bit dry straight out of the package, but 8-10 seconds in the microwave makes the cake nice and moist without melting the chocolate into a mess. These tasted quite similar to Choco Pies, though the green tea filling was a curious twist. I wouldn't say I loved them, but they really weren't bad at all. Definitely different. I'd certainly eat them again. My rating: ★★★☆☆

Where are you getting your Korean snacks ? There's a company in Los Angeles called SnackFever run by a bunch of Korean-Americans, that offers subscriptions to what amounts to a "Korean Snack Box of the Month". They have a variety of different boxes to choose from: Snack Box (3 sizes), Ramyun Box, and Doshirak Box. They are hardly what I would call cheap, but they do have a nice variety of things in them. I have fun with them. If anyone is interested, I think you can get a discount on your first box if you use this link: SnackFever

Samyang Nagasaki Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup (삼양 나가사끼 짬뽕)Korean ramen varieties are virtually endless. Today's is a Nagasaki-style spicy seafood one. Wait! Isn't Nagasaki in Japan? Yup. Many Koreans have still have plenty of animosity with Japan over their occupation of Korea, but that prejedice doesn't seem to extend to their culinary delights. After all, ramen itself is originally Japanese. These so-called "white broth" varieties like this are apparently all the rage in Korea. Here's a TV ad for the product: The contents were slightly unusual, in that the ramen brick was round rather than square, but that hardly seemed to make much difference in the preparation. There were separate packets for the broth powder and dried veggies as usual. 550ml of water. Go! How was it? Well, "spicy" is definitely the operative word here. Wow! My mouth and lips were set ablaze and I've been drinking cool beverages ever since, just to dampen the flames. I definitely worked up a good sweat with this one! ㅋㅋㅋ The spiciness aside, this was certainly a better quality ramen variety than many, with more veggies and some chewy bits of some kind of seafood. Anyone who can handle burn better than I can would probably quite like this. My rating: ★★★☆☆

Lotte 2% Peach Flavored Water (롯데 2% 복숭아)Just as here in America, flavored waters are quite popular in Korea. This one is peach flavored. While it's appearance is perfectly clear like water, you can definitely smell the peaches immediately. It is slightly sweet to the taste, a bit like a juice, but not as heavy. It's quite refreshing (particularly after eating a very spicy dish like I just did). My rating: ★★★★☆

Lotte Margaret Cookies (롯데 마가렛트)Margaret cookies are buttery cookies with a sweet filling. Each packet contains two cookies. I'm not sure what exactly the filling was, maybe brown sugar and nutmeg (?). They were quite alright, though nothing really spectacular. My rating: ★★★☆☆
